Frequently Asked Questions

At The Yoga Transition our clients have various levels of teaching experience. Some have recently finished their first 200 hours and feel the need to have some personalised sessions with a mentor to increase their confidence before they embark on teaching.

Others are teachers who have been teaching for 10+ years and want to dive deeper into a particular area of yoga that they have not so far. We cater for all levels of experience and know through our own journey that mentoring and continuing to learn is something that we can always benefit from regardless of our current level of experience.

Two options – Some client teachers know beforehand what topics that would like to cover with their mentor and these are discussed and often elaborated on in the mentoring sessions. Others client teachers don’t have specific ideas of what topics they want to develop. In this scenario, in the discovery session, the mentor will ask them about their personal practice, their teaching experience and their interests and from that a joint plan and vision is developed about what the mentoring sessions will involve.

A common starting point is for the client teacher to audio or video record one of their classes and then this is reviewed by the mentor to determine aspects that could be refined or further developed.

Typically The Connection, including all mentoring sessions and project work, is done over an 8 week period.

This time period works well as it allows for indepth inquiry without being too time diluted. In the contract terms and conditions that is signed by The Yoga Transition and the client teacher a timeframe is agreed upon. If for personal reasons a shorter or longer time period is preferred then this is usually no problem, it just needs to be agreed upon before the contract is signed.

Sometimes the path of learning requires that timeframe to be lengthened. An example of this would be when the client teacher completes a ‘Learn to Meditate’ course and then works to integrate these learnings into their asana classes.

Teacher training courses taught to groups of trainees are best for delivering large amounts of information on foundational topics such as ‘Form and function of asana’ or ‘Most practiced pranayama techniques.’ As they are taught to groups as opposed to one-to-one, teacher trainings are a one-fits all information delivery.

Mentoring however is more about refinement and personalising one’s teaching experience. All teachers begin with a teacher training group program of some sort and afterwards begin teaching in their community. As they continue it becomes apparent that there are specific areas of focus that they would like to learn more of or aspects of their teaching that they would like feedback on, or to develop. It is here that mentoring with an experienced teacher becomes worthwhile. It is an opportunity to get personal feedback and advice on the development of your teaching craft and an opportunity for someone to oversee your path and progression of knowledge.

Additionally, we offer a complete range of yoga classes, meditation, relaxation and breathing courses for you to practise at home with Yoga on Demand.

At The Yoga Transition we believe yoga in every class, in every studio, should be taught as a holistic practice.

We are not interested in teaching only a physical practice with physical benefits. Our teaching framework will help client teachers develop in the practices of functional asana, healthy breathing and pranayamaskilful meditation and an understanding of how to weave yogic philosophy into the practice. A well rounded meal that will be truly transformational to your students.

95% of our clients first work with our mentors through The Connection. This more in depth process allows a relationship, understanding and trust to be built whereby your mentor will be able to guide you on an appropriate path for where you are at. It is more challenging and often less effective to do just a one-off session without building a relationship first. For this reason we recommend all our clients go through The Connection first which begins with an in-depth Discovery session where the mentor gets to know the client and the client’s interests.

However if a client has a very specific idea of what they would like to develop with a mentor and the boundaries of the topic are very clear cut then we may be able to do 1-2 sessions under The Unfolding. If this would be appropriate to yourself please contact us to make this enquiry.
